George William Butler (Sharkey County)

Born: May 1, 1855 in Port Gibson, MS
One of the last Black legislators in Mississippi until the late 1960s. According to Freedman’s Bank records dated 1870 in Vicksburg, his parents were Eugene and Frances (born c. 1818 in Louisiana), and he had siblings named Eugene and Maggie. He is listed as a student in the 1873 Alcorn University catalog. On the 1880 census, Butler (listed as W. G. Buttler) is boarding with a family in Sharkey County and working as a teacher. Butler appears on the 1900 and 1910 census in Sharkey County, living with his mother, and alone on the 1920 census.
He may be the George William Butler who had a death certificate issued in Warren County in 1922.
