James H. Piles, the colored Chancellor of Sardis, Miss., is in jail for larceny. The lawyers who argued cases before him missed their books, and, obtaining a search warrant, they were found in his house, with the owners’ names erased, and “J. H. Piles” substituted. He was convicted, and the Chancellor of Mississippi is still in jail.
