James M. Young (Panola County)

Born: March 1849 in Spartanburg County, SC
Circuit clerk and attorney. According to Freedman’s Bank records, he was born in Spartanburg County, SC, his mother’s name was Angeline, and he had sisters named Nelly and Julia. He is listed as a student in the 1872 Fisk University catalog. Listed on the 1880 census in Batesville, occupation “county clerk,” with wife Mary R E Walker (m. 1876) and two young children. On the 1900 census, Young is listed as a widower living with six children and a mother-in-law. Listed on the 1910 census as “attorney and cotton planter” in Bolivar County with wife Virginia and a step-daughter. Newspaper announcements about his law services appear until 1919. He may be the James Young who died in Panola County in 1919.
