
Samuel W. Fitzhugh (Wilkinson County)

Born: c. 1843 in Natchez, MS
Died: August 21, 1878 in Vicksburg, MS (probably; see below)
Son of prominent free people of color Nelson and Agnes Fitzhugh, and listed with them on the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Natchez. In 1859, the Adams County Board of Police gave the Fitzhugh family a special license to remain in the State as free people of color. Fitzhugh is listed on the 1870 census in Wilkinson County as a school teacher, living with wife Delia Anna (also a teacher) and two sons. Member of the Corporations Committee while in the legislature.
A “Sam Fitzhugh, colored, 32 yrs” died of consumption at Hill City Infirmary in Vicksburg on August 21, 1878, during the yellow fever epidemic, and Delia is listed as a widow on the 1880 census, living with her sons in Memphis, TN.
