They are with Ames in everything, and seem determined to humiliate our citizens and persecute them if possible. Stick a pin here; it may be necessary to examine the “perforation” after a while.

Perhaps the editor of the valiant Vicksburger, during the present week, may have an opportunity to meet and converse with at least Mr. Sullivan, of the above enumerated gentlemen, who, we believe, is a member of the Investigating Committee, now on duty in Warren county. If so, we trust that the Vicksburger will not endeavor to “humiliate” him, or accuse him of trying to “humiliate or persecute” the citizens of Vicksburg. Such charges are entirely gratuitous and will not add to the placidity of the able Representative from Bolivar. The truth is, that neither Mr. Sullivan, nor Messrs. Warner, Shadd or Gray, have the least desire to “humiliate” or “persecute” anybody. The boot is on the other leg of the dilemma, and the Vicksburger would “humiliate” and “persecute” the entire colored population of the State, as it and its warriors and “Winchesters,” “persecuted” and “humiliated” them on the 7th of December. That game has ended, however, and cannot be played any longer. It should not be attempted.

But the same issue of the same paper has more to say about Speaker Shadd. Here is its paragraph:

Shadd, the negro Speaker of the House of Representatives, said in his speech the other day, that negro women were ravished by white men on the 7th of December, and negro men shot dead while coming to the city on cotton bales. A baser falsehood never came from the lips of anything wearing the human form, but then Shadd’s face and heart are so far asunder that they hold no intelligence whatever. In answering this crime of cowards the people may well exclaim with Othello: “You told a lie; an odious, damned lie; upon my soul a lie; a wicked lie.”

We have yet to learn that Speaker Shadd has ever made any such remark in any speech. If he did so speak, he probably had evidence of the truth of his statements, and the report of the Legislative Investigating Committee will tell us the particulars. The quotation from Shakespeare applies very well to some of the paragraphs that the Vicksburg papers printed about Mr. Shadd some months ago. Mr. Shadd’s face may be darker in hue than the faces of the men who circulate base falsehoods against him and against his race, but if his heart were one-half as black as theirs must be, with foul corruption, the world would shun him as it should shun them and brand them with the crimson mark of “murderer.”

[article continues]

https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-33x300.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-113x1024.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-150x150.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-768x6960.jpg"},"1536x1536":
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-169x1536.jpg"},"2048x2048":
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-226x2048.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-800x1200.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-100x100.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-scaled.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/The_Weekly_Mississippi_Pilot_1875_01_02_Page_2-scaled.jpg
["GET
