They did honor to themselves and the cause that called them forth. They had but one thing to regret, which was, the failure to get the music, which prevented marching through the streets as much as they would have done. The procession was formed at the A. M. E. Church, under the direction of A. S. Harrison, Marshal of the day and seven assistants on horseback, wearing regalias of red, white and blue on Buffalo St., and proceeded east to Huron St., then north to Congress, and then west until they came to the corner of Washington St.; there they gave three cheers for the abolition of slavery in the United States, three more for the Civil Rights Bill, and three groans for “Andrew Moses.” The procession then moved to the grove, where the speaking was to take place. Mr. John Richards, of Detroit, who was to be the orator of the day, failing to appear, the colored people made use of some good talent among themselves. A fervent prayer was offered by the Rev. H. P. Jacobs, of Ypsilanti; and then followed an oration by Mr. Newman, who did honor to himself and the occasion. The language was good and it was well delivered. The ladies now sung one of the patriotic songs of the day. Rev. Mr. Jacobs was introduced, who, on taking the stand, observed the picture of Andrew Johnson hanging by the heels, and said he could not speak until that was explained. -Mr. S. H. Wells came forward and explained. He said if he had the power he would hang any man by the heels that would call himself his “Moses,” and then veto every bill that was to give him and his race LIBERTY and equality. Then Mr. Jacobs proceeded with some very appropriate remarks. -They then had a piece of music and adjourned for dinner.

[…]

Rev. Mr. Jacobs here came forward and offered the following resolutions, which were unanimously adopted:

Resolved, That we will ever mourn the death of our beloved and martyred President Abraham Lincoln.

Resolved, That treason is a crime and ought to be punished.

Resolved, That the acts of the present Congress are all right and wise, and will be sustained by the loyal people of the United States.

Resolved, That we hold it to be one of the acts of a despotic government, and not in keeping with our Republican form of government to deprive any one of its male citizens that are of sufficient age and are loyal, from the right of elective franchise on the account of color.

Resolved, That President Johnson has turned traitor to the party that put him in power, and ought to be discountenanced by the great Union party that has carried the country safely through the war, prevented it from becoming a monarchy, and gave us our FREEDOM.

Resolved, That we will ever cherish the memory of the Union soldiers that fell in battle for our FREEDOM, and that we will assist in erecting a monument to their memory.

Resolved, That Christianity, education and industry, and fear dealing shall ever be our watchword.

The crowd now formed in line for Hewitt’s Hall, where a dance had been arranged for the evening. All passed off well, and we wish the partakers many happy returns of the day.

https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-140x300.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-477x1024.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-150x150.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-768x1649.jpg"},"1536x1536":
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-715x1536.jpg"},"2048x2048":
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-954x2048.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-1421x1200.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-100x100.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-scaled.jpg
https://much-ado.net/legislators/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Ypsilanti_Commercial_1866_08_11_3-scaled.jpg
["GET
