Vicksburg Herald, September 17, 1873

From these utterances you will see that affairs are not entirely lovely in the Radical ranks. There is a bitter contest going on between Lewis, the present carpet-bag incumbent of the Sheriff’s office, and Robert Gleed, for the candidacy for this important office, with the chances pretty evenly balanced but slightly in favor of Gleed. It may commend Lewis to the people of Warren county, to say that he is understood to be the brother-in-law of your distinguished Chancellor, the Right Honorable Edwin Hill. But enough of Radical political gossip for to-day. Au revoir. J. M. H.
