Letter From Marion County – A Model Carpet-Bagger – How the People were Outraged in the last Election, &c.

[excerpt]

Ballard and Hussey at first were both pretended Conservatives, but as the time for the election drew near, they were observed to be very intimate with the negroes, and especially one Mike, a preacher, who had many qualifications for that vocation, not the least of which was the fact that he belonged to a family of the most accomplished hog thieves in the State of Louisiana, but whose delinquencies since their relative has become Hon. Michael Wilson, Representative of Marion county, should perhaps charitably be set down as symptoms of that unfortunate malady, called by the learned kleptomania.
