Newton Weekly Ledger, Mar 4, 1875

The Senate killed the House bill making Warren county a Metropolitan Police District. This is decidedly the best thing it has done since the session. The bill was defeated by a vote of twenty-one to ten. All the white Radicals, except one, voted against the bill, while all the negroes, except one, voted for it. The negro who had the manliness to vote against the bill is named G. W. White, from Wilkinson county. He has shown he is not afraid to vote against party measures, when the party chooses to pass obnoxious ones. He deserves the thanks of the people of the entire State for the vote. The white miscreant who voted for the bill, one Packer, is said to have a negro wife at Jackson.
