A scurrilous sheet, published on the Meridian Railroad, has recently outraged Representative Cicero Mitchell by stating that he went to the celebration at Vicksburg accompanied by a bawd, when he went there accompanied, in fact, by his daughter. The author of that disgraceful libel accepts the correction of it published in this journal, but attempts to skulk out of it under the technical plea that the libel was put under that old safeguard of scurrility, “we are informed!” “They say,” “we are informed,” “I am told,” “it is said,” are stock phrases in the mouth of people who speak lying evil of their neighbors; and have a universal acceptation amongst decent men, which but goes to deprive them as the means employed for covering up falsehood by malicious cunning.
