Take, for example, some of the specimen legislators of Warren county – Barrow and Speaker Shadd – the last lately indicted by a negro Grand Jury at the Capital, for adultery – both carpet-bag negroes – and Charley Bush and Charley Head, late Legislators, and how do they live? They are smart enough to get appointments of negro meetings as delegates to a county Convention, and then by bargaining, divide all the offices among the members – taking the best themselves; and during the session of the Legislature draw their $500 and mileage – besides all they can make by their votes; and during the recess Shadd was keeper of our city Work-house – Bush a Jail-guard, and Head overseer of the chaingang – but now, that the whites have elected city officers, Shadd and Bush are quartered on the State Immigration Bureau as employees.
