The Clarion, February 18, 1875

MR. GILL introduced a bill to repeal the section in the Code of 1871, giving each pupil in Normal schools 50 cts., per week and moved to suspend the rules to place it upon its passage; carried; yeas 44, nays 15. Mr. Johnson, (col.) of DeSoto, moved to indefinitely postpone the bill, he was opposed to taking this money from the poor children. Mr. Gill was opposed to hiring children to go to School, they received free tuition books, etc., and that was enough.

MR. AVERY opposed the bill, and moved to refer; Mr. Rogers (col.) of Marshall favored the bill; said it would save $200.00 a month to the State; Mr. Williams (col.) moved to table the motion to refer; right lively time between the Speaker and Mr. Rogers of Marshall; repeated between Messrs. Gill and Avery. Motion to table carried; some more fun. Mr. Avery moved to reconsider the vote placing the bill upon its passage; Mr. Street moved to table; carried. Mr. Gayles (col.) moved to table the bill; lost; yeas 36, nays 48. Considerable more skirmishing on the bill, when the previous question was ordered and the bill passed; yeas 51, nays 31.
